The more I use the iPhone, the more it seems obvious that Apple sees SMS as dead or dying and intends to replace it with email and online chat. The iPhone has no MMS, and nor do I expect it to get any, and SMS are treated in a very chat-like way. In the sort of way that you could actually allow them to swap out the underlying system, in this case SMS, and replace it with something else, say Jabber, and the iPhone end user wouldn’t even notice. I’ll be interested to see what happens down the line.
